In a recent research report Published by the Australian governments Department of infrastructure, Transport, Cities and regional development it is forecast that total domestic freight volumes are projected to grow by approximately 25 per cent between 2018 and 2040.

Road freight volumes are projected to grow by around 56 per cent between 2018 and 2040 (average annual growth of 2.0 per cent per annum).

Rail freight volumes are projected to grow by around 16.4 per cent between 2018 and 2040 (average annual growth of approximately 0.69 per cent per annum).

Air freight volumes are projected to grow by around 17 per cent between 2018 and 2040 from 337 million tonne kilometres in 2018 to around 393 million tonne kilometres in 2040.
